Art & Design Expressive Studies and Expressive Enquiry

Expressive Unit â€“

In this unit the student works independently to plan, research and

investigate chosen artists working in a specific area of expressive art.

They will present a coherent body of work with clear, relevant and

in-depth accurate factual information and substantiated judgements

about the artists’ work and the contexts which informed their practice.

The students will identify suitable expressive stimuli and produce creative

investigative research material for an agreed expressive enquiry.

During this enquiry they will develop and refine a series of experimental

development ideas for expressive art work, using their previous research

and investigation as inspiration for their own work.

Expressive Portfolio -

The student begins the portfolio by reviewing their unit work; identifying one or more strong expressive idea(s) which will be used as a creative starting point for further development of their enquiry. The student’s practical work needs to demonstrate their ability to develop creative ideas and art work in response to their chosen expressive stimulus/theme/concept as well as demonstrating their applied knowledge and understanding of art work and practice. It should show evidence of sustained development of their expressive art idea(s) and one or more finished piece(s) of art work.

The student will also analyse in depth the work of other artists.

At Advanced Higher students are expected to present and prepare their portfolio for assessment with the minimum of support.

The portfolio is worth 100 marks of the overall marks for the Course assessment and the course is graded A-D.

Art & Design Studies and Design Enquiry

Design Unit â€“ In this unit the student will work independently to plan, research and investigate chosen designers working in a specific area of design. They will present a coherent body of work with clear, relevant and in-depth accurate factual information and substantiated judgments about the designers’ work and the contexts which informed their practice.

The student will then produce a design brief and outline plan of work for an agreed design enquiry and then produce investigative work in response to the design brief and outline plan. Students will then use this research and investigation to develop and refine developmental concepts and ideas in response to the design brief.

Portfolio - The student begins the portfolio by reviewing their unit work; identifying one or more strong design idea(s) which will be used as a creative starting point for further development of their enquiry. The student’s practical work needs to demonstrate their ability to develop creative ideas and design work in response to their design brief as well as demonstrating their applied knowledge and understanding of design work and practice. It should show evidence of sustained development of their design idea(s) and one or more finished design solution(s). A further critical analysis is required on a piece of design work or group of closely related design works. The subject must have informed the practical work.

At Advanced Higher students are expected to present and prepare their portfolio for assessment with the minimum of support.

The portfolio is worth 100 marks of the overall marks for the Course assessment and the course is graded A-D.
