S1 AND S2 COURSE
The aim of the S1 and S2 courses is to develop the pupils' mathematical skills in the following key areas: and has been fully updated in accordance with the experiences and outcomes under the Curriculum for Excellence Guidance.
Problem solving and enquiry
Information handling
Number, money and measure
Shape, position and movement
S1
Initially, pupils come to Maths in mixed ability classes and experience working in groups, on their own in a whole class and in pairs. The main teaching resources are Heinemann and Teejay Maths textbooks. The pupils work on particular topics after teacher led lessons. The level of work is determined by the pupil's progress through the Curriculum for Excellence outcomes and experiences in Primary school. Activities are chosen so that pupils are more actively involved in their learning. Learning is reinforced by practical activities, playing games, using computer programs and graphic calculators. Pupils are assessed on a regular basis.
S2
Pupils come to Maths in two broad bands of ability and the lessons are teacher led followed by individual or group work. The S2 course is based on the Heinemann Maths textbooks and Teejay. All classes cover the same topics but may cover them at a different pace and to different levels. Each topic is assessed and progress is monitored very regularly.
S3
In third year pupils will follow the Access or National 4 course depending on their progress through the S1/2 course. These courses consist of 4 units of work which are internally assessed. Pupils who complete the National 4 course will move on to National 5
S4 (Session 2012-2013)
In fourth year the pupils will continue with their Standard Grade courses at Foundation/General and General/Credit levels. These courses are again designed to meet the needs and abilities of all the pupils in the Mathematics Department and will prepare them to deal with mathematics in 'real-life' situations. The main resource used is Maths in Action. There is free movement between these levels in the third and fourth years.
There are 2 assessable elements: Knowledge and Understanding (KU) and Reasoning and Enquiry (RE), and two types of paper:- Non-calculator and Calculator.
S5/6 Students (Session 2012-2015)
In S5 pupils may progress from their Standard Grade courses to one of three courses:-
Higher: for pupils who attain a grade 1 or 2 at Standard Grade in both elements, KU and RE
Intermediate 2: for pupils who attain a grade 3 or 4 at Standard Grade in both elements KU and RE
The Advanced Higher course is available to pupils in S6 who achieved a grade A or B in Higher.
The teaching approach in S5/6 is an attempt to have a balance of teacher led, individual and investigative approach in whole class, group and individual contexts.
