Plockton High School Library - What can your school library do for you?

Plockton High School Library is about much more than just books.

The school library is a place of quite, subtle learning.  The librarian wants pupils to visit for fun as well as inspiration.  Our senior pupils visit us throughout the day for autonomous study, with younger pupils visiting for structured library periods.

We have many resources available to staff and students alike – books, magazines, leaflets, journals and much, much more;  we can help with assignments, careers advice or just the love of reading.

Of course the library isn’t just about books – it is a space away from the bustle of the main school, where you can chill and refocus, there are quite reading spaces away from the structured assignment desks, for contemplation and quiet chat or to do a crossword or word-search, or even try to solve the word wheel.

Things to See & Do

  • Themed displays, highlighting topics of interest or focusing on a genre of material held in the library.  We also have an ever changing display highlighting the life and works of a specific author every fortnight.

  • Creative Writing Corner with lots of helpful resources for creating pieces of work, there are also links to many creative writing competitions running throughout the year and the librarian is happy to proof read or submit your work for you.

  • Where In The World quiz, we display a flag and some facts relating to a different country of the world can you guess where it could be?

  • S(h)elf Help section with a host of material and leaflets relating to personal and social issues, it is tucked away in a discreet area of the library, but the librarian is always on hand to talk about anything concerning a pupil.

  • QR Corner with links to digital resources, that are free and waiting to be downloaded to phones or chrome books, anything from : newspapers, magazines, graphic novels, ebooks, audio books, to videos of washing one’s hair in space!

You can always see the newest recommendation from our Book Pen Pal – published author Sylvia Hehir, who writes to the pupils telling them of exciting books to read and enjoy.

There’s a Study Skills Section to promote new and more exciting ways to engage with your study topics – ways to make information more accessible and memorable.  We also have a host of reference material, like past papers or topic and coursework guides.

We can arrange meetings with the careers advisor and provide to college and university prospectus materials.

There is always something new to see or do in the library – if, on the off chance you can’t pick a book to read, don’t forget to visit the Shelfies wall for inspiration from staff and pupils as well as friendly published authors, or look skyward to see the Book Bunty recommendations from the pupils.
