Overview of what will be studied in S1:

Ready, Steady Go!

 

Aim - to introduce pupils to Home Economics.  Pupils will develop an awareness of hygiene and safety and the principles of healthy eating.  This is done by following the dietary targets and the Eatwell plate.  This work is reinforced by relevant practical activities.  A variety of learning and teaching activities are used following the new curriculum.  At the end of the unit pupils will make a short presentation on a topic to do with diet.

 

Design and Make Challenge

Aim - to introduce pupils to the design process.

Pupils will design and make a muesli bar.  They will build on their knowledge of healthy eating, the importance of breakfast and will learn about the functions of the nutrients.  They will also look at packaging, labelling and advertising.

 

Design and Make Fabric Challenge

Aim - to encourage the skilled use of the sewing machine.  Pupils will use recycled material to make a small item.

 

S1 - Homework consists of carrying out practical tasks and using recipes to make a variety of dishes.

There is a Craft and Cooks' Club held each week to develop skills and have fun!

 

Here is an overview of the topics you will be studying in S2 and S3

Souperdouper

Pupils learn about the process of food product development and working with a design brief.  Pupils develop their own recipe for an exotic soup.  A recipe book of their own recipes is produced between Business Studies and Home Economics Departments.  Posters are done in the Art Department.

Food for Fitness

Aim - to introduce knowledge of nutrients and the functions in the body.  Encourage pupils to plan balanced meals.  Further develop practical and organisational skills.

Food as Fuel

Aim - to consolidate nutrition, applying it to practical siuations.  Pupils will further develop practical skills.  Pupils will make a presentation on dietary diseases.

Food Challenges - pupils do some challenges to produce a variety of foods - e.g. healthy burgers, different types of muffins or dishes using herbs from the herb garden.

Pupils are encouraged to take part in the Futurechef competition and in other competitions.

 

S4 National Course in Home Economics - the new qualification that replaces Standard Grade

 

This course is designed to offer development of practical skills and understanding appropriate to food preparation and cookery.

 

Although there is a written element in the course the majority of the course work will be practical.  The exam consists of making a 3 course meal in two and a half hours.
