PLOCKTON HIGH SCHOOL

ARD SGOIL A’ PHLUIC

PARENT COUNCIL CONSTITUTION

OUR OBJECTIVES

To represent the views of parents.

To promote a welcoming partnership between the school, pupils and parents.

To support the education and welfare of the pupils and to raise funds for the school.

WHO CAN BE A MEMBER OF THE PARENT COUNCIL

Membership is open to all parents and carers who have pupils attending the school. The Council will consist of a minimum of three parents.

The Parent Council may co-opt members, including teaching and support staff, provided the number of co-opted members does not exceed one-third of the number of elected parent members. Parent Council members will serve for one year, which can be renewed.

HOW THE COUNCIL WILL BE RUN

The Parent Council will appoint a Chair Person from among parents with pupils at the school, and a Secretary and Treasurer, annually.

The Parent Council will meet at least once in every term, with additional meetings held, if requested, by two members. The meetings will be open to all members of the Parent Forum. Each Parent Council member will have one vote, the Chair having a casting vote in the event of a tie. If a member acts in a way considered by the majority of the Parent Council to undermine the objectives above, their membership will be terminated.

An Annual General Meeting of the Council will be held annually, within a 15-month period, to which all members of the Parent Forum are invited, with two weeks notice of the date of the meeting. A report of the activities of the Parent Council will be given, audited accounts presented for approval and an election to the Parent Council will be held. An opportunity will be given to discuss issues raised at the Meeting by the Parent Forum members.

The Parent Council will arrange for a Special General Meeting of the Parent Forum if requested by 10% of the Parent Forum members, giving two weeks notice together with an agenda. The Parent Council may change the Constitution after obtaining the consent of the Parent Forum at a Special General Meeting called for that purpose.

The Financial Year will run to the end of December. The Treasurer will open a bank account in the name of the Parent Council, keep proper records and prepare an annual account, examined by an independent auditor, for presentation at the Annual General Meeting.

The Secretary will keep proper records of meetings and will make available a copy of the minutes to all parents and teachers on request.

Should the Parent Council cease to exist, any remaining funds will be passed to the Education Authority for the wider benefit of school education.
