Biology affects everyone and aims to find solutions to many of the world’s problems. Biology, the study of living organisms, plays a crucial role in our everyday existence, and is an increasingly important subject in the modern world. Advances in technologies have made this varied subject more exciting and relevant than ever.
S3 Biology
The exciting world of Biology is opened up with knowledge and understanding being developed through investigations, while the everyday world around you is brought to life with examples and real life concepts.
The experiences and outcomes allow students to develop and practice a range of inquiry, investigative and analytical skills, leading to attributes of scientifically literate citizens.
There are short tests at the end of each topic to check understanding, practical skills and problem solving. Regular homework will be given to further develop the wide knowledge base that is required to study biology at higher levels.
National 4 and 5 Biology
This course encourages development of skills and resourcefulness, leading to confident individuals in Biology.
In this course the following units are studied: Life on Earth, Cell Biology and Mutlicellular Organisms. Each unit concludes in a Unit and Course Assessment along with suitable practical experience. An Added Value Unit and Assignment are also completed throughout the year which count towards the final grade awarded from the SQA.
Higher Biology
In S5/6, pupils who have achieved well in National 5 Biology courses, are encouraged to consider the corresponding Higher courses. Each Higher grade course builds upon the knowledge gained from the courses in S3 and S4. Each unit concludes in a Unit and Course Assessment along with suitable practical experience. An Added Value Unit and Assignment are also completed throughout the year which count towards the final grade awarded from the SQA.
Advanced Higher
In addition to the Higher course the department also offers Advanced Higher Biology. The Advanced Higher courses allow pupils considerable scope to study independently and in detail, chosen areas of biology and provide an excellent introduction to further advanced studies.
